We've had time, now to think ahead to some of the problems we might have with this new society we've created. What if, in spite of the success of the trick we've played, some of the People discover the truth? Of course we'd deny we caused it. We'd claim it's human nature and can be changed only over a long period of time. But, how could we pretend to these People that we're restoring the old balance without actually doing It?

Well, in the first place, we'd make these complainers understand how they've benefited from our "system." "Do you really want to go back to a lower standard of living?" we'd say. "Less money, just to help marks look like they're the same as People?" "People work hard for their money," we'd say. "Marks don't work hard." "Do you People really want marks to mingle with us," we'd say, "and not only lower our standard of living, but dilute our genetic stock, our cultural values and our national pride, all at the same time?"

People will buy these arguments. They're afraid not to.

Then we'll have some politicians push legislation that sounds good to complainer-People, but won't restore marks. People will pay extra and will have high expectations. But, of course, nothing will change for marks. We'll blame that on the laziness of marks. And, just to keep People in their place, we'll blame People , too. We'll tell them it's really their fault because of their poor opinion of marks. And, they'll know in their hearts, it's true.

If our hand is really forced, though, we'll do this: We'll concede to the inclusion of marks among People, but only the best; only the ones that can "imitate" People and can learn to do the same sophisticated things we've taught People to do. Never mind that there are many People who can't do them either. We'll claim that even People who can't perform sophisticated tasks for us nevertheless carry "People genes" which will result in sophisticated People-children for the future.

We'll tell People that educated (assimilated) marks can't make the same claim. Educated marks will have to make sure their children excel in People schools, because those children of educated marks who don't excel – who do only average work – won't be allowed to remain among average People. They'll be forced to live back among regular marks.

Now we have a self-perpetuating system. You and I are at the top with most of the money because we're the invisible leaders of this new society. Only we know how it got the way it is, and how to keep it that way. We're wealthy. And, only we know how much money we have.

We have a large population of People who are dependent upon us to keep things the way they are, so they can have some of the leftovers. They actually think they're rich! Little do they know how rich we are.

We've educated a few of them to be helpers in our money-making enterprises. We've given them ownership of businesses, and we control the ways in which they invest their money. They can afford excellent educations at the universities we provide for them. Those who are successful can become politicians. They'll tell the People that the "equality" mentioned in the Constitution refers only to political equality, not social or economic equality. We'll let a few of the politicians and some of our business leaders in on the "secret" of how we got so much money. That way, they have an investment in the maintenance of our system. These are the the few, the "aristocrats."

We have a larger group of People who run the businesses for the "aristocratic" leaders. They can afford decent educations in order to play their role. A few of them will make enough money to graduate to the "aristocrats." But, the rest are kept in the dark about the "secret." We've told them that it's their customs, dedication to hard work, and basic honesty which are responsible for the rise in the standard of living of our society. Because of this, they have great pride in our system and want everything to stay the way it is. We've told them that if all People were like them the world would be a wonderful place to live. We don't let them know that all people, including you and me and the marks, actually already are like them. These are some of the many, the "commoners."

We have a still larger group of People who provide labor for the businesses of the "commoners." They receive some education; just enough to perform the tasks required. They're not happy with their position. They wish they could be like the higher classes of People. Now and then, they threaten to force the higher classes of People to share their wealth. Sometimes, they even begin to understand the "secret" of our society. This is very dangerous to us, so we take great pains to frighten our "aristocrats" and "commoners" into thinking that this lower class intends to take over, and "steal" their money and position. These are the bulk of the many, the "peasants."

We'll reward some "peasant" People by making them the managers – the go-betweens – the buffers between People and marks. That way we and the higher classes will be shielded from marks, the "peasants" won't feel so keenly their own deprivation, and they'll be grateful for their elevated position relative to marks. We'll even make them the police and absentee landlords for marks. And, just to make sure this contact doesn't result in sympathy, we'll treat this buffer group with suspicion and distrust. That way, we can pay them less, and cause them to hate marks in a futile attempt to prove their continued loyalty and equality to People of the higher classes.

There is resentment between all these classes. But, we will confuse them by pointing out that with just a little good luck, they can be members of the next class up. We'll give it a game-like atmosphere. "Movin' on up!" we'll call it. Sort of a lottery of hope. Same popularity as Lotto. Same odds, too. But, what decent citizen would want to change our system and wipe out their child's chance to win?

And, then we have marks.

Marks make up about twenty per cent of our total population. They know what we did to them. But People won't listen to them. Who would? Some marks are even beginning to forget. "Lotto fever" is rampant here, too. Marks are very important to us; much of our money comes from not having to care what happens to them.

We have several "classes" of marks. Some come from our society, but some are from elsewhere. We know they're too few in number to ever get revenge on us; that is, as long as they don't combine with "peasants." That's our nightmare, isn't it? Again, we can put it to use in making "aristocrats" and "commoners" afraid of marks. But, we know how to make sure the nightmare never actually happens. We'll tell "peasants" that marks are trying to steal their jobs. When "peasants' strike, we'll send marks in to break it. We'll keep the different classes of marks apart by treating foreign marks better than our marks. this'll make the different classes of marks treat each other worse than People treat them. People will shake their heads and wonder how anyone can accuse People of prejudice when marks demonstrate their inferiority by treating each other so poorly.

You and I have earned ourselves a good laugh at the expense of every one else, haven't we? Aren't we happy? We've achieved everything we wanted. We have more than half the money, just you and I; we control the rest of it; and we've involved everyone else in the game as well. No one can point the finger of blame at us. We keep 'em busy blaming each other. Even better than that, all citizens now recognize what we thought from the first: that we do , indeed, deserve more than they do; that we truly are the best. They even imitate us. They play the same trick on each other and raise their children to want to be like us. They would kill before they would return to the bad old days of equality.

It was so easy. All we had to do was to trick people into thinking some of their fellow citizens weren't really people. We found out that all you have to do is use a name or number – a label. Now, all we have to do is export our system by making marks of whole countries, and have them work for us. Just think; it would be a new world order, wouldn't it?

After my friend finished his narrative, he sat gazing at me, expectantly.

"It would be criminal to do the things you had us do in your story," I told him, "and it's not democracy at all, is it?"

A sad smile crept across his face. As he rose to leave, he handed me a folded page from the local newspaper.

Now, why did he give me this, I wondered, as I watched him amble out through the door into the bright sunlight of the parking lot. The page was folded to an article entitled, "America: The land of the free and the home of the brave."

As I scanned down the narrow columns of newsprint, I found myself reading some of the same statements I had made only twenty minutes earlier. They sounded so hollow, so contrived in the light of my friend's story. I found that I was looking at our economic system and racism in America differently since we entered the fantasy land of "People" and "marks." And yet, somehow all along I had felt that his story wasn't really new – that somewhere deep inside my mind I already knew all this; and I also knew that the real story would be far worse than my friend's fantasy.

It was then, with a sensation like prickly-heat sweeping over me, that I appreciated the power of the conditioning that had prevented me from using my common sense to see the truth about our society.

And, it was then that I decided to keep my attention on the conditions of the ghetto – to judge our progress as a nation by those conditions, not the fortunes of selected individuals.

I will not be fooled again by tokenism or elitism...or false democracy.
