Questions For White Americans© 1992By James Lester
Question: What do white Americans feel are the factors or qualities within themselves that give them a "right" to their advantaged conditions of life as compared to Americans of color? Question: Do white Americans feel they derive such a "right" from their parents or ancestors? Question: Do white Americans feel they derive such a "right" from identity with a larger group which has achieved those conditions? Question: Why do white Americans believe that, either because of inheritance or group identity, they have come to possess qualities which make them more deserving of advantaged conditions than Americans of color? Question: What are those qualities? Question: Why do white Americans believe that their advantaged conditions of life were not achieved, and are not maintained, by depressing the conditions of life of Americans of color, but instead believe that those depressed conditions are the result of the actions and ineptitude of Americans of color? Question: What are those actions; that ineptitude? Question: What actions do white Americans think Americans of color should or can take in order to share with them their advantaged status? Question: What actions do white Americans think they themselves have taken to achieve and maintain their advantaged status relative to Americans of color? Question: Are there any differences between the answers to the previous two questions? Question: What do white Americans think is the reason Americans of color have not taken these actions? Question: If Americans of color took the above actions, would it result in all humans sharing the conditions of life of white Americans? Question: Are the advantaged conditions of life of white Americans a realistic, achievable goal for all humans? Question: What do white Americans think is the reason they are obliged to defend the advantaged conditions in which they live from the claims of Americans of color? Statement: If you find it difficult to answer these questions, or you don't get the point; read A Peoples' History of the United States by Howard Zinn, or go to http://www.postfun.com/racetraitor/welcome.html and then come back and read these questions again. |
